Midland Marble and Granite’s Flooring America will be glad to install your wood laminate floor for you, or sell you the materials so you can do it yourself. Here is a brief overview of the process.

Because wood laminate flooring expands and contracts with humidity, it is not meant to be attached to the subfloor. Rather, it sits on top of it, enabling it to move and adjust to changes in humidity. For this reason, it is not recommended for bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Installing a wood laminate floor requires up front planning. Measure the area and add ten percent for waste. If the room’s humidity is between 45 and 65 percent, be sure to leave a minimum gap of ¼ to ½ inch as an expansion zone between the edge of the flooring and the perimeter of the wall. Undercut door trims and door jambs to allow the floor to move. Be sure to check the height of the new floor against all doors that enter the room because it might be necessary to trim the bottom of the door so it clears the floor. Also be sure the subfloor is clean, flat and free of any bulges or adhesive residue from previous flooring materials.

Start on one side of the room and place spacers along each wall to preserve the expansion zone. Set the first plank down and add another piece to its short end, making sure the tongue fits completely inside the groove. Repeat the process and when you get to the end of the first row, cut the last piece to fit. Use the left over to start the next row, but if the piece is shorter than 8 inches, cut another piece to a suitable length. Do not start with an uncut piece to ensure the boards are staggered when side by side. Assemble each row, end-to-end, connecting the short ends first, then angle the full length assembled boards up against the previously installed length. Make sure the tongue fits completely inside the groove for the entire length of the room. Repeat this process, row by row, until you get to the last row. The boards of the last row will most likely have to be cut length wise to achieve the desired width.

Finishing the wood laminate floor installation can be challenging, requiring a lot of small cuts and trims. Be patient and measure carefully. When all the laminate flooring material is in place, remove the spacers for the expansion zone, and install the wall base or quarter round. It is very important that the wall base or quarter round is attached to the walls or subfloor, and not the laminate flooring, so the flooring can move and adjust with humidity.

This is the second of several posts dedicated to carpet stain removal.

Coffee – Use a wet/dry vacuum first, if you can, because it will pick up the liquid without spreading the stain. Then mix a teaspoon of dish detergent in a quart of warm water. Apply a little at a time using a spray bottle. Work it in gently, then blot it up using a clean white cloth or white paper towels. Repeat as necessary. Now mix 3 ounces of white vinegar in 6 ounces of water and apply/blot several times, as necessary. Drying the carpet quickly with a fan or weighted paper towels will help prevent deep rooted coffee stains from migrating to the surface.

Soft Drinks – Use a wet/dry vacuum first, if you can, because it will pick up the liquid without spreading the stain. Rinse the area with water using a spray bottle and blot. Mix a tablespoon of ammonia in a cup of water and spray on the stain. Repeat spraying/blotting but do not soak the carpet heavily that the solution reaches the padding or damage could result.

Ketchup – Rinse and blot using water to remove as much as possible, then mix a tablespoon of ammonia in a half cup of water and apply with a spray bottle. Blot and repeat as necessary. Mix a few drops of dishwashing detergent with a cup of warm water and apply it to the stain. Blot and repeat as necessary. Repeat spraying/blotting but do not soak the carpet heavily that the solution reaches the padding or damage could result.

Nail Polish – Apply nail polish remover to the corner of a clean white cloth and dab the stain with the cloth. Work it gently. Do not spread the stain deeper into the fibers. Do not pour polish remover on the stain because it can reach the backing of the carpet and cause delamination, damaging the carpet. Be patient and repeat until the stain is gone. Then you have to remove the polish remover from the carpet using a mixture of a few drops of dishwashing detergent in a cup of water and spraying it on the area, then blotting. Then you have to remove the detergent from the carpet, or it will attract dirt. So rinse and blot with plain water.

Pet Poop – Pick up large pieces. Scrape dried remains using the edge of a spoon or dull knife. Flush the spot with water and use a wet/dry vacuum to recover the water. Repeat as necessary. Mix a tablespoon of ammonia with 4 ounces of water to neutralize odor. Don’t let it soak too deep into the carpet. Spray and blot repeatedly. Mix four to five drops of dishwashing detergent in a cup of warm water. Spray this and work it in gently. Blot and dry.

Urine – Act quickly and use a wet/dry vacuum to get it out of the carpet. Then mix ¼ teaspoon dishwashing detergent with one cup of warm water and spray over the area. Extract the solution using a wet/dry vacuum or blot it up with cloths. Then mix two tablespoons ammonia in a cup of water, rinse, extract and repeat as necessary. Lightly apply a solution of one cup white vinegar in two cups of water, rinse and extract. Then dry the carpet.

This is the first of several posts dedicated to carpet stain removal.

There is a long list of things that can stain your carpet. Here is a list of common stains and commonly used techniques used to remove them from your carpet. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting to clean a stain. There are many different types of carpet fiber, and each reacts differently to stains, detergents and chemicals.

In many cases, the process involves applying water and using a white cloth or paper towels to blot up the liquid and stain residue. You can use a wet/dry shop vacuum to apply and recover water in greater amounts, but adding too much water can cause a stain to spread, so do it in small portions and repeat the process numerous times, until the stain is removed. It is always a good idea to dry the area quickly after applying water. Do this by stacking weighted white paper towels on the area for a while and/or positioning a fan nearby to blow over the spot.

Beer – Use a white cotton cloth or white paper towels to soak up any remaining liquid. Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar with 2/3 cup water in a spray bottle. Spray area and blot up liquid. Do until the stain is gone.

Berry Stains – Spray water on the stain and blot up with a white cloth until the stain stops transferring to the cloth. Then add a few drops of dish washing detergent to a cup of warm water and apply to the stain. Blot up and repeat until the stain is gone.

Blood – Act quickly to remove the blood before it coagulates. Rinse and blot with cold water. Use a little. Too much will spread the stain. Hot water will set the stain, possibly making it permanent..

Candy – Mix a few drops of dish detergent in a few ounces of warm water and apply it a little at a time. Work it in gently and soak it up with a white cloth or paper towels. Rinse with water, blot and dry.

Cheese – Mix a tablespoon of clear ammonia with 4 ounces of water and spray this mixture on the spot. Blot and repeat until the stain disappears. If you don’t get satisfactory results, try a mixing a few drops of plain blue Dawn dish detergent with a cup of water. Apply, blot and dry.

Chewing Gum – Use an electric hair dryer to heat the gum. Be careful not to melt the carpet fibers. Use plastic wrap or a plastic bag to lift the softened gum. It will stick to the plastic. This will get most of it. Then apply a muscle rub that contains methyl salicylate (Extra Strength Ben Gay), and use the plastic again to pick up the remaining gum. Clean the area with a mixture of a few drops of plain blue Dawn dish detergent with a cup of water. Apply, blot and dry.

Chocolate – Put an ice cube on the spot to harden remaining chocolate. Scrape out the chunks with a dull knife. Do not use excessive force because you don’t want to damage carpet fibers. Wet the area with a little water at a time and use a wet/dry shop vacuum to remove some of the chocolate. Then mix a tablespoon of clear ammonia with 4 ounces of water and spray this mixture on the spot. Blot and repeat until the stain disappears. If you don’t get satisfactory results, try a mixing a few drops of plain blue Dawn dish detergent with a cup of water. Apply, blot and dry.

Old Carpet Stains – Use a combination of vinegar, Tide detergent and warm water. Tide HE is a low sudsing detergent for front loading machines, and tends to work a little better.

There are numerous things to consider when determining carpet quality including density, twist and pile height. Denser carpets last longer and feel more comfortable in bare feet. The denser and higher the pile, the more fiber the carpet is made with and increases the overall price. Basically, you get what you pay for with regard to carpet.

Midland Marble and Granite’s Flooring America provides the exact specifications including density, twist and pile height, whereas many stores do not. We are very up front with details regarding quality because we want you to get exactly what you need and be happy with your purchase years down the road.

Carpet density refers to how closely a carpet’s individual tufts are packed together. High density carpets tend to resist crushing and matting better; and they wear better than low density carpet. An effective way to determine density is to bend the carpet back and see if the backing shows through. A better quality, denser carpet will not show much backing. A lower cost, less dense carpet will show considerable more backing. Dig your fingers into the fibers to see how much backing you can feel. A dense carpet makes it difficult to feel the backing.

Carpet twist refers to how many times the fiber has been twisted before being heat set. The more tightly a fiber is twisted, the better quality the carpet. Look at the ends of a carpet’s twist to determine the quality. They should be tight and neat. Strands that are lose or flared open are an indication of lower quality carpet.

The pile height refers to how far the carpet extends above the backing. It is simply a measure of how tall the carpet is. While higher pile reflects higher quality, many people prefer to have a lower pile carpet on their stairs.

If you have any questions about carpet quality, ask your sales representative at one of Midland Marble and Granite’s Flooring America’s showrooms.

Beware of cheap carpet. Cheap generally means you are sacrificing something in the process. The fibers may not be color fast so they won’t resist stains. The cheap carpet may matt, and not hold up well in high traffic areas. A cheap priced carpet may come with expensive installation and all types of hidden charges.

Be sure to get a comprehensive quote from a reputable source that has full-time installers on staff. In addition to the cost of the carpet, consider the cost of the pad; tear out of old carpet and padding; disposal of it; delivery charges, and costs associated with moving furniture off and back onto the carpet.

Some companies have low overhead so they can offer cheap carpet. The problem with these low overhead operations is that they don’t stand behind their product or service. In many cases, they won’t even be in business a year or two down the road. Most are not insured and bonded. And did you realize that if an installer doesn’t use the right tools, or techniques, it can void the carpet’s warranty? That’s right.

There are plenty of ways to save money on carpet without going cheap. MMG Flooring America gives you a great overall value, with financing options and great discounts. Our professional sales staff can help you match the quality of carpet with the traffic level of different parts of your house, so you get the best overall value, and quality results you can be proud of for years to come.

Comparing the price of carpet can be tricky because of the number of variables. Each of the carpet manufacturers use different grading systems to convey the different quality levels of carpet. One manufacturer’s level 5 may only be as good as another manufacturer’s level 4.

Make sure you look at the fiber type. Nylon tends to last longer. Polyester is fairly durable, not doesn’t last as long as nylon. Olefin is the least durable. Also look at the twist ratings. It measures how many times a fiber is twisted over an inch. Genrally, a twist rating of 5 or more represents higher quality carpet.

The face weight represents the number of ounces of fabric per square yard, and is a good indication of quality. Heavier weights, 35 and higher, reflect better quality.

Density is also critical. It represents the number of fiber tufts per square inch. Look at the back of the carpet to see if the manufacturer provides the value. Another way to compare density is to bend it backwards to see if the back shows through. Cheap, poor quality carpet shows the backing more readily.

The Carpet and Rug Institute rates carpets on a scale of 1 through 5 based on their ability to resist wear over time. Look for a CRI rating between 2.5 and 4 for carpet in the home. Use carpet below 2.5 for rooms with little traffic. Ratings above 4 represent the highest quality carpet that resist wear the best.

When you compare carpet prices, look at more than just the cost per square foot of the carpet. Be sure to consider the cost for padding and installation as well. Are there charges for removing and replacing furniture? What about delivery?

Finally, make sure your carpet is installed by a professional that is trained and uses modern carpet installation techniques and equipment. If the carpet is installed wrong, it can void the manufacturer’s warranty, and can reduce the life span of your carpet by as much as 50%.

When you compare carpet prices, begin at MMG Flooring America. Our professional sales staff will make sure all cost factors are considered so you get a true picture of the overall value. And our professional installers make sure the job is done right

Cost per square foot is just one of the many factors when buying carpet. Some retailers charge to remove and replace furniture, removal of old flooring, sub-floor preparation, delivery of the carpet, disposal of the old carpet, materials such as adhesive and moisture barriers. And don’t forget to ask about installation. Financing is also part of the overall value equation when trying to figure out how to buy carpet right.

Regarding the carpet itself, quality is always a major concern, but how do you compare apples to apples? It’s difficult because carpet quality is affected by a number of factors, and different manufacturers use different terminology to describe their carpet. One manufacturer’s Grade 5 carpet may be no better than another company’s Grade 4 carpet.

Carpet quality is a factor of the fiber used, density of the fiber, the twist and the finish. Thickness may make a carpet seem more luxurious, but it does not affect its performance or overall quality.

Carpet fibers can be either continuous filament or staple. Both perform equally well. 60% of carpet fibers care made out of nylon because dye is added to the fiber during manufacturing, so it is colorfast. Nylon is resilient, wear-resistant and tolerates heavy furniture. Untreated nylon can stain, so make sure, if you buy a nylon fiber carpet, that it is treated to be stain resistant.

Olefin, or polypropylene, is commonly used in outdoor carpet. It is not as soft and plush and comfortable as other fibers, but is moisture and mildew resistant, stain-resistant and easy to clean.

Polyester is a lower cost fiber that provides a soft, luxurious feel, but is not as resilient or stain resistant as nylon. IT is best suited for low traffic areas.

Acrylic fibers has the look and feel of wool without the cost. It is moisture and mildew resistant and resists static build up.

Wool is the most expensive fiber and the only natural type used in carpet. It is very durable and has a luxurious feel. It is easy to clean and naturally soil resistant.

Blends. The most common blends today are wool/nylon and olefin/nylon.

Fiber density is a good indication of quality. Bend the carpet and see if you can see the matting show through the fibers. Poor density carpet shows the matting and can be a real problem, especially on stairs, where the carpet is bent and the area gets heavy traffic.

Think about where your house gets the most traffic. Put better quality carpet in the areas that get the most traffic because they will hold up better. Save money and put less expensive carpet in rooms that need to look nice, but won’t have the abuse of heavy traffic.
